Good Morning America, May 23, 2005
GMA greets him and point out he is looking good for a dead guy.
SC: "I'm feeling pretty good this morning"
GMA: When are the services planned?"
SC: "Next week. I'm being cremated, they are going to scatter my ashes"
GMA: How long have you known? How did you find out?
SC: "What's today? I found out right before we started shooting the finale,
right before the script came out.
GMA: How did they break it to you?
SC: "I got a call saying, can you come into the producers office
this afternoon? So I pretty much knew. All the men on our show from
the beginning have known that the show is called Desperate Housewives,
is not called Desperate Husbands and that we are in the service of story
and we are all very expendable. I think we pretty much have the attitude
that is we can get though a year we've done really well. You know I gave
Rex, just in my mind, 2 years max. I did not think that they could keep
playing the same thing over and over again"
(Commentary about how the show is sort of based on the producers personal life)
GMA: ".... it mirrors the creators actual life..."
SC: "He says it all the time, that Bree is somewhat based on his own mother
and I don't think the VanDeKamps are the Cherry family, but I think we are
a version of his family. A couple of months ago I asked him, so Marc you
are always talking about your mom, what happened to your dad? 'Well he died
of heart decease'. And I didn't want to say 'well so how does that affect my
character? But I thought it.
When we talked he felt that he had sort of written out all the variations of
Rex and Bree that he could, and that because it is the women's show he wanted
to take Bree into another direction. And he also said 'I am at the part where
my dad has the big heart attack and I don't know what the rest of the story is"
(comment about the Rex's note to Bree)
SC: "Isn't that great? That was not in the original version of the script and
when they gave us that re-write I thought, the whole scene with the doctor
where he thinks that he has been poisoned, I thought that was brilliant!"
GMA point out the scene where Bree says: "The Best is yet to come"
SC: "Don't you know something bad is going to happen right after that?"
GMA mention the death of past characters
SC: "Is becoming a May tradition because 3 years ago my character on JAG was
beaten and left for dead in the season finale, but I came back. Then last year
in the same week, he was apparently dead again on the same show, though we came
back again, and then I died as another character, Major Hayes on ST Enterprise.
This week is DH. Is a May tradition, is just not May sweeps without my death"
GMA ask if SC and his family (3 year old twins) will watch the show
again
SC: "Oh I was never going to let them watch it anyway. EVER. Not until they are
20 or something. Ah.. well you know my favorite character is gone, so I'm not
sure... you know, if I am going to keep watching anymore. But Marcia doesn't
watch the episodes anymore. Makes her too nervous. So somebody has to keep an
eye on her and let her know how she is doing.
GMA/Charlies says he is looking forward to next May.
SC: We'll Im thinking of actually doing a reality show called "dead actor" and
they are going to follow me around to various shows"
