Letter from Mr. Culp
March 2007
"Dear Friends,
My sincere apologies to you all. It is March already, and I have yet to thank
you for remembering me on my birthday! I did receive your gift and cards, and
as always, I appreciate deeply your kindness and thoughtfulness.
Thank you, also, for all the wonderful and supportive thoughts you sent my way
last August. The trial was quite an ordeal, as you probably imagined if you
read the newspapers accounts. The bright spot in that very grim period was
the fact that, over the years, the Harvey family had developed a remarkable
network of friends who loved them very much. I’ve rarely seen such an
inspiring example of a tight-knit, caring community. They are terrific
people, everyone one of them and I am privileged to have gotten to know them.
One of the reasons it has been so long to write is because I wanted to be able
to give you news about TRAVELLER, and until this week there has been no news.
Well, as most of you are now probably aware, we finally go on the air
beginning Wednesday, May30th, at 10pm. Why did it take so long? A lot of it
has to do with the fact that, when we made the pilot a year ago, serialized
thrillers in the mode of “Lost” were in vogue. Last fall we had a bumper crop
of shows like this, and with a very few exceptions (for example ‘Heroes’),
they fared poorly. Even “Lost” is currently losing viewers. Since our series
falls into this broad category, all of this has understandably, affected us.
The fact remains, however, that we have an excellent show; I’ve seen a number
of episodes, and I am very pleased with it. It is a tremendous relief to get
it on the air after all this time. Because I have been contractually tied to
this show, I have been unable to do other pilots, or recurring roles on other
series. Whatever the ultimate outcome it will be good, finally to be able to
either continue this one, or move on to something else (though I would be very
sorry to say goodbye to this character, my wonderful fellow actors and the
great scripts).
In the meantime, I will be appearing in the play “BLACKBIRD at A.C.T.
(American Conservatory Theatre) in San Francisco. I’m very excited about
this; it promises to be one of the most challenging things I’ve done in a long
time. And what better time to do it than now? We start previews April 27th,
and open May 2. Performances run through May 27, just three days before the
debut of TRAVELER.
FIREHOUSE DOG, as you probably know, opens April 4. I saw a screening of it a
while back, and I thought it came out very well. It’s a good old-fashion
family movie that adults can enjoy as well as kids. It’s a great movie for dog–
lovers, too.
That is all the news I have right now. I hope you are all doing well. Thank
you, thank you once a gain for your continued support.
Best wishes,
Steven Culp"
