Angels in America

Steven Culp played: Joe Steven Won a Dramalouge Award for this role in 1996
This is an award winning Play by Tony Kushner. There are actually two parts to “Angels in America”, both written by Tony Kushner. The play is based on the story of a gay man named Prior who is diagnosed with AIDS. His lover, Louis, consequently leaves him for Joe, a married Mormon who abandons his wife. What does this have to do with Angels ? Well there are angels in the play. One of them for example tells Prior that he is a prophet. The Angel tells Prior that "God has left heaven and that he and his fellow humans should abandon progress. Prior then must decide whether to follow this angelic advice and succumb to AIDS, or reject it and struggle to live on long after it has become convenient for him to die." The play is filled with symbolism and meanings that touch on many aspects of life in the 90’s. The play is complicated, humorous and filled with obscured meanings that will leave you seeking for its meaning well after the play ends. This play earned Kushner the Tony Award for two years in a row.
