The Velvet Sky

Staged Reading September 2005, SF Playhouse From SFist: "This disturbing adult fairy tale centers on 12-year-old Andrew, whose father steals him away to New York City. His mother soon chases them, as does a menacing presence lurking in the shadows. Ditching his father, Andrew heads out into the city himself. If you spot any comic book flavors in the plot--namely in the menacing presence--you're right on target." From woollymammoth: "THE VELVET SKY is a cock-eyed, dangerous fairy tale world which asks, with a wink and wide-toothed grin, about how much fear we can live with," said Taichman. "It's just the kind of play I love to direct -- explosively theatrical, dark, hilarious, extremely stylized, and unbearably heartbreaking." SYNOPSIS: Hovering in a neverland between dreaming and waking, poor Bethany hasn't slept in 13 years in an effort to protect her son Andrew from the Sandman. At the end of his rope with his wife's sleeplessness, her husband Warren whisks Andrew away in the middle of the night to New York City. Bethany's already fragile grip on reality starts to weaken and she sets off after them, setting into frenzied motion this nightmare fantasy brimming with wild comic detours and surreal hallucinations."
